Antique Silver "Il Gobbo" Desk Seal.

19th century
Description

19th. century Continental silver desk seal: in the form of "Il Gobbo" a hunchbacked character, beautifully attired in tailed coat, waistcoat, watch and chain, and carrying his hat in one hand and his gloves in the other. "Il Gobbo" (the hunchback) is a traditional "good luck" symbol particularlly in Italy, where the tradition says that if you rub the hump you will have good fortune. We have had items of this theme before, of course, but generally in the form of bracelet charms or watch fobs; this is the first piece we have encountered of this size and substance, so it should be regarded as pretty rare.Wonderfully detailed and a real joy!
