We are delighted to offer this wonderful Georgian solid silver tobacco/snuff box with the marks of James Phipps I (London) c.1770.
This silver circular box is made with superb proportions, larger than the norm yet not too bulky to disrupt usage; it has the most wonderful feel in hand where the curved edges and the size fits perfectly in one''s palm.
Interestingly, whilst snuff boxes normally have a hinge (between the lid and base), tobacco boxes of the 18th century tend to have a relatively simple ''pull-off'' design.
Whilst the precise reason for such a design choice is not ascertained (as of yet), some theories suggest that loose tobacco leaves for pipes would require more time and preparation in comparison to pinching snuff which could be done on the go. As such, tobacco boxes did not require a hinge as it would be used whilst sitting down/placing the box and lid down as opposed to a snuff box which would be rapidly opened and closed for a single pinch.
Such unique factors in comparison to a snuff box and the scarcity of such tobacco boxes make these boxes a further collectable item.
Furthermore, due to its accommodating size, in the modern day, it may also be used practically for carrying pills, mints or small sweets on the go in a distinguished and stylish manner and bound to be a conversation starter for the keen-eyed.
The box also features a lovely hand-engraved period crest for the M''Call family that completes the overall Georgian classical look with a fine, minimalist elegance to its overall aesthetic and antique patina colouration.
The box is only hallmarked with the maker''s mark ''I.P'' for James Phipps I of London.
A wonderful classic Georgian piece of silverware remaining in excellent antique condition despite being over 200 years old.
