An antique wooden Chinese 19th century wedding box/basket with swing handle and bat shaped front metal lock.
 
These boxes were used for auspices fruits for the wedding couple.
 
Red lacquer work with carving of a pair of phoenix to the handle.
 
Wax chinese seal to the lid.
 
Two metal bands to the central body and the base.
 
Wedding rituals have a long history in ancient China—the most auspicious custom being the presentation of gifts representing the couple’s engagement, the groom’s promises to the bride’s family and the acceptance of the bride and groom into each other’s family. The red lacquer symbolized good luck and great fortune.
