Fine Ormolu and Sevres Porcelain Boudoir Antique French Clock

19th century
Description

A fine and early Ormolu and Sèvres style porcelain clock by the famous case maker and retailer Rollin of Paris and the movement by Japy Frères. It is exquisitely modelled in finely gilded bronze, showcasing the finest quality. The intricate folds and swirls of drapery are especially fine. The nymph fondly looks down on the nest of birds in her arm; the birds raise their heads in return. Overall, the lasting impression is one of pure innocence and ethereal beauty.

To the base is a finely painted panel of exotic birds attending to a nest, set within a cartouche with pompadour blue ground. The dial is enamel on copper with a blue hour ring and a separate black minute ring. The original hands are finely fretted gilt brass and the rear door is also glazed with convex glass to allow the movement to be seen. The clock sits upon it's original gesso base.

The French movement is of high quality and has both the early Japy Frères clockmaker's mark and also the retailer / case makers mark of Rollin Paris on the backplate. It is the earlier version of Pendule de Paris movement with outside hammer return spring. The clock case unusually has the movement serial number stamped into it confirming the case and movement to be original to each other. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send a link.

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with just some slight wear on the high spots. The dial is also in excellent condition just a small chip to the edge of the dial near the '15' and near the '60'. We have replaced the fabric on the base.
