A pair of highly decorative marble urns. The handles cast with horned Bacchic masks, with an amused expression, joined by floral garlands. This pair of vases are made from Alabastro Fiorito with an extra fine variation in colour. Objects made from this material are in many museums, including the Louvre, and was favoured by Roman artisans to be bought by the aristocracy during the grand tour. Cassolettes originated in France as decorative vessels used to burn solid perfumes or pastilles. By the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly during the Grand Tour era, they evolved into ornamental classical vases made from marble and gilt bronze, often featuring removable lids that inverted to reveal candle sockets.

Traditional cassolettes feature turned or carved hardstones such as porphyry, alabaster, onyx, or veined marble. These bases are combined with heavy cast bronze mounts that are fire-gilded (ormolu) or patinated, incorporating motifs like satyr masks, laurel garlands, and acanthus leaves.

Authentic pieces display hand-chased metalwork with visible casting marks on the undersides, thread-cut assembly rods, and irregular oxidisation within crevices. The gilded finish on period ormolu shows subtle wear where handled, rather than uniform modern spray gilding or lacquering.
