This excellent pair of watercolours are by one of England’s most famous hunting and sporting painters.

A London artist, John Sanderson Wells studied at the Slade School of Art and Academic Julian.

He exhibited in London at the Royal Academy from 1895-1904, and he was elected to the Royal Institute in 1903.

These paintings depict a part of English foxhound hunting in what is most likely Leicestershire.

One study depicts the huntsman, whips, hounds and followers in full cry. The action of the horses and hounds is exceptional.

Being a hunting person myself, I have seen many a chase, but to be able to capture this in a painting is true talent.

The other study depicts the hunt ''going home'' at the end of the day. Again, equally as detailed.

It is a pleasure to see that all the tack is depicted as it should be, painted with great attention.

Both paintings are signed, one in the bottom left hand corner and the other in the bottom right.

They are both in good condition, professionally framed (most probably the original frames) with fine washline mounts.

Having been in my personal collection for over fifty years, they are now available for sale.

Size to include frames: H47cm L57cm Images only: H26.5cm L36.3cm
