Edward Henry Eugene Fletcher 1851-1945,John Hayes was a pseudonym of Edward Fletcher.Fletcher was Born in Hammersmith he was the son of a Bengal river pilot,and having spent some time in India the family returned to England whilst he was still a boy.He was educated at Christ’s Hospital and the Chelsea School of Art where he became a close friend of Daniel Sherrin,the landscape artist. After his marriage,Fletcher lived in Blackheath and owned a small auction house.At about forty he gave up the business to become a professional painter ,having previously painted as a hobby. He also painted under the pseudonym John Hayes,and himself is often mistakenly called Edwin Fletcher.He specialised in painting busy shipping scenes on the River Thames in a style not dissimilar to William Wyllie and made good use of impasto.Many of his pictures are understood to have been sold in North America. ...
