Aramis Antiques has dated this piece to the 1880s.
The placement of the rivets is shown in the photos but the repairs do not detract from the magnificence of this piece. The central base crack has been left unfilled. The planter is profusely decorated and hand painted in the classic lustrous and rich Imari colours of royal blue, red, orange, light blue, gold and some green. Around the planter are two large and two smaller panels of Japanese scenes with figures, and surrounding these are profuse and dynamic designs of scrolls, circles, semi-circles and other shapes all inset with a multitude of colourful patterns. The old repairs are barely noticeable. The planter is solid and sound. It is magnificent.
