The bag face is in outstanding original condition with very slight wear and no repairs.

The bag face has been hand washed and is ready for display. An outstanding and collectable example.

A Shahsavan Soumak bag face is a decorative woven panel originally forming the front of a storage bag or mafrash used by the nomadic Shahsavan tribe of northwestern Iran and the Caucasus. These pieces feature intricate flatweave constructions using the Soumak technique, characterised by wrapped weft threads creating detailed geometric and zoomorphic patterns.

Soumak textiles are created using a supplementary-weft flatweaving technique where coloured pattern threads are wrapped over and under the warp threads. Natural hand-spun wool coloured with vegetable dyes is predominantly used, producing a textured, durable surface with a flat structure.

Authentic 19th-century Shahsavan pieces feature natural dyes, hand-spun wool, and traditional iconography such as stylized birds, dragons, and geometric rosettes. The reverse side exhibits loose, floating pattern threads characteristic of true Soumak weaving, along with clear colour saturation and fine weave density.
