Description

This stunning sofreh, with its bold yet subtle zig-zag pattern, symbolises flowing water. Important in the daily lives of the nomads is bread, salt and water. The bread sofreh therefore, was used for kneading the dough prior to making the delicious 'lavash' or flat bread and, as bread was an important staple in nomadic life, the weaver has incorporated the symbolic flowing water by using the zig-zag design.

Woven by Afshar nomads in the province of Kerman, southern Persia during the last quarter of the 19th century, this amazing sofreh has survived a hard existence to be found in very good overall condition.

Sofrehs like this look amazing hanging on the wall and I see them as woven works of art.
