N Wilson Antiques Clocks has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
This lovely antique library clock has a rosewood was with a lovely rich colour and grain.
There is then a moulding to the top edge of the case followed by a ribbed section and then a flat brass moulding. The body of the case is then square with a viewing window to the front, sides, and back, each having a lovely brass frame. There is then a further moulded section leading to the base which is finished by four thin brass feet.
The dial is then painted and set out in black Roman numerals with a thin ring of dashes to the outside marking the minutes. The centre of the dial is then signed by the maker “J.T. BELL 131 Mount Street BERKELEY SQE.”. Finally the dial is finished by two lovely shaped hands as well as a protective glass set into the door.
The movement is then unusually a French example. The movement strikes once on the half past as well the number of hours on the hour via a bell. The movement also ticks away as it should and comes with it’s beautiful regulating “fusee style” pendulum, winding key, and travel nut. The movement also has an engraved plaque to the bottom reading “Sold as French Movement” where I believe the clock was originally sold in this manor.
