18thc Engraving by F Vivares for Lord Burlington Dated 1753

18th century
Description

An 18thc engraving titled A View in Craven, Yorkshire of a Beautiful and Natural Cascade in Bolton Park belonging to the Rt. Hon the Earl of Burlington by Francois Vivares, dated 1753 in the inscription at base. The image is well known and examples exist in the British Museum and the Yale Center of Art. Vivares was a French landscape engraver (1709-1780) working in England. The engraving was made of landscape at Bolton Park, owned by the Earl of Burlington (1694-1753), the “architect earl” and patron of the arts and architecture at the time. The engraving is clean and undamaged though the paper has darkened a little with age. It is well framed in a plain black frame and gilt slip, and glazed. There is superb detail in the engraving - of the cascade, rocks, trees, gentlemen and deer.
