Description

A charming early 19thC Staffordshire pottery handpainted jug with an inscription dating it to 1822 and an underside mark R, attributing the item to makers Samuel and John Rathbone, active 1812-1835. The jug is inscribed beneath the glaze for Ellen Rogers 1922, so it was likely made to commemorate her birth or christening or other milestone event. The jug is profusely decorated with colourful handpainted chinoiserie scenes including a frieze around the inner and outer neck and spout. The handle too is decorated with a line of orange fruits and leaves. The jug is so pretty and seems to be in amazingly good condition for its age, a 200 year old survivor. There is a tiny hairline crack just inside the spout. A small identification card is included, presumably researched by the previous owner.
