ANTIQUE #SA1000239

Antique Early Metalware 18thc Yew Wood Handled "Race" Knife. English C1760-80.

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Mark Seabrook Antiques

A rare example of a ''race'' knife or raze knife....used for gouging out a groove or race in standing timber on roof trusses of early houses....this knife is of the more elaborate type as it incorporates a spike and a cutter for carving circular grooves....if you remember seeing the various marks and numbers carved into the beams in the roofs, then this is the tool the joiner/roofer would use....it is in excellent condition and it is very hard to find early surviving examples of these bygone tools....the cutter has the name of the maker stamped onto the blade (see picture 3), but it is almost too worn to read .

English. C1760-80.
