Description

This massive Karadja from the Heriz district of North West Persia is very striking and handsome. A heavily abrashed medallion floats on a gorgeous red field filled with flowering vines, in abstract design. The equally abrashed main border has an extra girth to the width that is courtesy of the extra large size and really gives the overall look a higher impact. A beautiful and dramatic carpet in very good condition. Showing light wear but clean and ready for the floor.

Karadja carpets originate from Northwest Persia, crafted in villages near the Heriz region. They feature geometric latch-hook motifs, central star or medallion configurations, and a palette dominated by rust-reds, navy blues, and cream accents.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheep wool pile woven onto a cotton or wool foundation. Natural plant and insect-based dyes are applied to colour the yarn prior to hand weaving on upright looms.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible hand-knotted asymmetrical or symmetrical knots on the reverse side, minor variations in pattern symmetry inherent to village weaving, and natural colour variations known as abrash.
