A good sized tilt top wine table, solid mahogany, with five column cluster base, ringed with superbly carved acanthus capitals in the manner of Thomas Chippendale's workshop.
The table dates from around 1790 and the four legs arch out with heavily fluted and channel carved details to terminate in pentagon feet. The top has an original brass locking mechanism which tilts smoothly and is very well balanced. When flat the table locks down firmly and is extremely robust. It is a very well made example, well cared for, and a practical height for sitting alongside a sofa or chair.
Condition: good condition, a few dents and darker marks to the top - old and well blended and part of its history. The pentagon feet may be 19th century replacements but they are correct in style and if not original, then copied from the originals.
The table has a rich colour and is large enough for books, lamp and a glass or two. The tilt top allows you to hoover around the base without having to pick the table up (it is heavy!).
A good Georgian table. Practical, handsome and cheaper than a modern mass produced small table.
