A PAIR OF C19th COUNTRY YEW WOOD WINDSOR CHAIRS REQUIRING RESTORATION |
| Good Points - A Near Identical Pair With Elm Seats and Crinoline Stretchers of Lovely Colour and at a price which should make the necessary work completely viable.
Bad points - Slight splits to the rear of both seats. One seat wormy (not terminal) and with vacant knot hole. One arm loose on each chair, one with clean break which needs glueing. One rear stretcher to each chair non original. One arm support probably an old replacement. Colour O.K. but slightly different in shape.
There you go wasn't too bad was it! Since these chairs would be worth at least £450.00 each as a pair in good order there should be room for somebody somewhere to make a profit but I don't suppose it will be me! |
V.RARE MID C19th 'NOTTINGHAM YEW WOOD LOW BACK WINDSOR CHAIR |
| A Very Rare Chair in lovely condition. Due to their rarity these chairs are sometimes falsely assumed to have been cut down but were in fact Tavern chairs and the forerunner of the 'Smoker's Bow'. They occour in various regional variations.
This one is of the 'Nottingham' genre but the arms and legs indicate to me that it was made in nearby Lincolnshire, probably Sleaford.
The front legs, crinoline stretcher, spindles, splat and arms are all Yew. The backrest is Burr Yew, the seat Elm and the back legs and stretchers Ash. It has had some very minor restorations over the years but is a remarkable survivor having been purchased privately by myself along with two others from the owner of a bed and breakfast establishment in Seaton Devon where they saw many years of service. |
