| Early Antique French Clock - The Warrior
~ French - Circa 1850 ~
~~ Excellent condition ~~
This is a very decorative and early French clock, originally retailed in Paris and fitted with a silk suspension movement. Clock depicts a medieval warrior, holding a war axe and a shield. The clock is decorated with trophies of war; early guns and a suit of armour. Being an early clock, the casting is heavy and well defined, the front is gilt brass and the figure is cast in spelter. Colour of the spelter is original and is burnished to a pleasing pewter colour. To lighten the design there are two panels of alabaster fitted to the front of the clock.
The dial is enamel on copper and is in excellent condition, there are just two small marks near the Brocot shaft. The delicate blued steel hands are original.
French silk suspension movement is of excellent quality, runs for 8 days and strikes half-hourly on a bell. Originally retailed by the Paris retailer Wurtel at the Vivienne Gallery, (in existence from the beginning of the 19th century and we think it is still there today) their mark is on the movement backplate. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully cleaned and serviced by our clockmaker. The pendulum is an old replacement. Click the movie below to see and hear the movement working!
Condition of the case is excellent with a bright and clean finish, some very minor wear on the high spots and some minor tarnish / discolouration in places. There are couple of minor stress cracks. The rear of the case has been repaired and new back feet fitted.
Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
A superb early French clock for your collection!
