Walnut 17th

Walnut Candle Stand, 17th Century

Late 17th century Walnut Candle Stand Twelve sided top, inlaid with bone and ebony, on barley twist stem 32.75 inches high, top 14.5 inches across

Pair of fine quality fruitwood chairs c.1690

A pair of fine quality carved fruitwood and cane chairs c.1690 - 1700. The carving is extremely good and wonderfully fluid, the back and legs beautifully raked; the chairs present themselves with an elegance and style which is typical of the architecture and dress of the period. This type of chair, which was a huge advance in style and comfort, was created after the Restoration, first appearing in c.1664. The cane, or rattan, of the seats and backs was imported by the East India Company; large numbers of these chairs were made as they swiftly became extremely fashionable. HEIGHT: 51 inches CONDITION: one cane seat needing repair; extensive old woodworm damage to front legs and front stretchers; both chairs slightly loose-jointed. Excellent colour. These chairs should really be considered as 'objets d'art' rather than 'chairs' as they are not suitable nor designed for heavy use. However, they are very evocative of their period, epitomising the Baroque style, and they make a very strong aesthetic statement purely as decorative objects. PROVENANCE: a Suffolk private collection.

Very fashionable c.1650, this burr walnut veneered frame has an authentic look; now containing modern mirror plate. Excellent condition Size: 36 x 29.25 inches. Sightline 27.75 x 20.75 inches
