London 1894 solid silver matchsafe of large size. |
| London 1894 Victorian English hallmarked solid silver matchsafe of large size, and heavy weight.
Vesta cases and match safes are airtight cases made to contain short friction matches and keep them safe and dry. They were made in many materials, and some in precious metals like this one, usually with gilt linings, to protect against corrosion from the match heads. They were widely made and used from 1890-1920. Many had a loop attached, like this one, to attach to an albert chain. Now, they are very collectable and interesting small antique silver items.
Size-2 3/8 inches long by 2 1/8 inches wide, and weighing 50 grams.
Hallmarks are rubbed, and there are some age commensurate minor marks to safe.
Match safes were meant to hold matches, but can now also be used for pills, two photos and the like.
With solid hinged closure to side.
A nice well made and large example. |

Victorian Porcelain Scent Bottle |
| This pretty Victorian porcelain scent or cologne bottle was intended for a lady's dressing table, and was probably manufactured in Germany or Austria around the 1880's.
It measures 5" high including the stopper, and has no marks other than impressed numbers 1733 over 39 to the base. It is hand decorated with cerise daisies and sprigs, with just a band of gold around the base and the lid. There is no damage to the bottle or stopper and the gilding and pattern are not worn.
This would make an attractive addition to a scent bottle collection or just as a dressing table ornament.
