High quality Victorian 4-piece silver tea and coffee set |
| This is a quite superb high quality 4-piece Victorian tea and coffee set by the top class silversmiths Martin, Hall & Co. The set comprises Coffee pot, teapot, cream jug and sugar bowl. The set is designed with half reeded circular bodies with a plain band surmounted by a band of beautiful leaf engraving and high beaded shoulders, and leaf capped reeded handles. The hinged covers of the teapot and coffee pot have an applied rosette band and silver finials with a leaf surround. The teapot and coffee pot have ivory thermal inserts. The interiors of the cream jug and coffee pot are gilt.
Condition: Virtually perfect. There are no dents or splits and no scratching to the plain surfaces. There is a slight raised mark on the interior of the lid of the teapot. This might have been original or is possibly an old repair. It doesn’t show on the upper side of the lid and I think it’s of little consequence, but should be mentioned. The hinges of the coffee pot and tea pot are perfect and the lids open and close perfectly and precisely. The pins where the thermal inserts are attached to the handles are all in place and the handles are perfectly firm. The coffee pot and teapot are perfectly clean inside.
Dimensions: Teapot is 5” (13 cm) tall and measures 10” (25 cm) from the edge of the handle to the tip of the spout. Coffee pot is 7 ½” (19 cm) tall and measures 9” (22 cm) from the edge of the handle to the tip of the spout. The cream jug is 3” (7.5 cm) tall and measures 5 ½” (14 cm) from the edge of the handle to the tip of the spout. The sugar bowl is 4” (10 cm) tall and measures 6 ¾” (17 cm) from the edge of one handle to the edge of the other.
Weight: The teapot weighs 20 oz (570g). The coffee pot weighs 21 ½ oz ( 600g). The cream jug weighs 6 ½ oz (170g). The sugar bowl weighs 10 ½ oz (300g). Total weight of the set is 58 ½ oz (1640g).
Capacity: Teapot 2 ¼ pints (1.2 litres). Coffee pot 2 ¼ pints (1.3 litres)

The teapot has a silver handle with ivory thermal inserts, a sure sign of a quality tea set. It also has a silver and ebony finial attached by a silver wing nut and bolt. The sugar pot and cream jug have lightly gilt interiors.
Condition: Virtually perfect. There are no dents splits or repairs. The handle of the teapot is firm and perfectly solid with no movement, the silver pins being precisely in place. The spout is undamaged and the hinges of the lid are in perfect condition so that the lid opens and closes perfectly and exactly in place. The interiors of all three pieces are perfectly clean.

A BEAUTIFULL FULL silver tea and coffee service by EDWARD HUTTON, London 1886 |
| A COMPLETE and BEAUTIFULL FULL silver tea and coffee service by EDWARD HUTTON, London 1886. All pieces are fully stamped with the lion, EH and dated for 1886. My photos cannot show this lovely set properly. I have a record of just a similar coffepot that was sold at Halls fine art auctioneers on 21/11/2003 for £200 plus 15% premium, and it was not as nice a shape.
This set is fresh to the market, as it came from a private house who had it in the family for many years. |
