Pair of oval antique silver salts |
| 4 reeded feet, the bodies chased, reeded and pierced. Blue glass liners one with starcut base, the other probably a replacement. Maker Joseph Scammel. Hallmarked London 1790. |
Silvered glass salt |
| An example of the rare silvered glass in the form of a salt dish. Quite plain except for a gadrooned rim, the interior is stained yellow. The plug is still in place, although the label is now illegible. 4.5 cms high; dia.of base 8 cms. Slight bloom on the silvering but condition very good. NB. In England this type of glass was patented in 1849 and shown at the Great Exhibition in 1851. Production ceased within 4 years. The three most important producers were E. Varnish, Hale Thompson and W. Lund, and their names appear on the label affixed to the seal which protects the internal silvering and is an all important element on each example. |
