Japanese laquer and shibyama cabinet |

Rare collectable Victorian original "Fry's Choice Chocolate" mahogany display cabinet. |
| Victorian rare Fry's Choice Chocolate mahogany shop display cabinet with original side glass, shelves, mirrored interior sliding back doors and lining.
Fry's chocolate, in business since 1759, became Britain's biggest commercial manufacturer of chocolate by 1822. They produced the first chocolate Easter egg in the UK in 1873. The company merged with Cadbury in 1919, jointly becoming the British Cocoa and Chocolate Company.
"J.S. Fry & Sons Ltd" is carved into the front lower wood base, while the front glass is etched "Fry's Choice Chocolate," as well as with the very attractive Royal appointment crest.
An extremely lovely original cabinet to house a collection, with 3 glazed sides, and the fourth side being mirrored.
Also a great talking point. When these are found, they are usually found with either replacement or missing parts. Often the front etched glass or the mirrored doors have not survived.
Size 27 inches wide by 26.5 inches high by 15 inches deep.
This cabinet is all original and intact.
A rare find, in excellent condition. |

Jacobean oak boarded chest c.1605 |
| An interesting and unusual oak boarded chest of the reign of James I.
At first glance it seems as if it is an early box on a later stand, but the sides run all the way down to the ground as solid planks; and the curvature and decoration of the supports is typical of the early date. The plinth running around the box is a later Georgian addition.
The feet, probably replacing damp rotted timber, are also Georgian and probably date from the time when the box was 'modernised' by the addition of the Late Georgian plinth.
The front of the chest is scratched or scribed out in an elaborate decorative scheme using the Romanesque arch motif fashionable at the time. This may have been meant to be carved out and never was, or perhaps the scribing was once coloured in with paint; much early furniture did have colour applied...now nearly always lost.
Size: 31 inches tall, 43 inches wide, 26.4 inches deep.
Condition: Good; some alterations as listed above; good deep colour.
Provenance: a Yorkshire Private Collection |
