Superb 19th century French silver and enamel snuff box in scallop shell form. |
| French silver snuff box made for export from 1840-1879, in a lovely scallop shape with all over engraving, bright cutting, and stunning enamel accents to the top lid.
The top centre is decorated with musical trophies and accented with a striking design of cobalt blue, emerald green, white and turquoise enamel.
The sides are engraved with alternating engraved designs, and unusually, the reverse is all over engraved, having a scrolled centre cartouche. It is decorated so beautifully, that it could be a top lid decoration as well, something only seen in very high quality silver.
The interior is gilded, and the hinged lid closes securely and is airtight.
Marked very crisply with the Mercury head in shaped shield, showing that the silver was made for export during the period stated only.
Size-2.75 inches long by 1 5/8 inches wide by 7/8 inches high.
Weighs 60 grams.
Makers mark in lozenge is not identified.
A very high quality snuffbox, in a gorgeous shape with beautiful enamel, in very good condition. |

18th century Birmingham 1786 solid Georgian silver double snuff box. |
| Birmingham 1786 English hallmarked George III period solid silver unusual double lidded snuff box enclosing two gilded separate compartments.
Top of snuffbox is overall foliate and scroll engraved and has two blank cartouches. The jewellers hinge concealed by laurel leaves, must have been made by a specialist hinge maker. It is in perfect working condition still. And, the lids seal quite tightly.
The edges and waisted sides have bright cut engraving.
Size 3 inches long.
The reverse is engraved with a beautiful acorn and oak leaf decoration.
In the original 18th century gilded interior, the underside of one lid is engraved with a 1938 inscription with what I believe to be a cricket connection. "To Critch, Surrey Championship, May 6, 1938." This must have been quite a prize even then!
A very unusual and lovely piece in very good condition, with the only barrier to calling it excellent condition, being that the top decoration is not quite as crisp as new after 222 years! |
