SOLD...Portrait of a Midshipman c.1810; Circle of Sir Thomas Lawrence

Oil on canvas in original Neo-Classical frame. SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE (1769-1830) was the most remarkable British portrait painter of his day. He became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1791, Member in 1794 and President in 1820. In 1792 he was made Painter to the King. Lawrence's work epitomised the Regency style. This sensitive yet bravura portrait of a young Royal Naval officer painted during the Napoleonic War is typical of Lawrence's dramatic style; the background a windswept cloudiness, the sable curls on the forehead, the parted lips and brilliant eyes which were to indicate 'the more private sensibilities of the heart'. Lawrence overcame the restrictions of the head and shoulders portrait by infusing it with a dynamic and sensual movement - a sense of drama for dramatic times. This is apparent in every aspect, from the turn of the sitter's neck and the tousled 'Classical Roman' hairstyle - all revealing the debt to, and interest in, Classical sculpture and form which defined the taste of the age. This is a memorable painting of a very young naval officer whose chosen career was one of great danger. There is an urgency to the image and the unspoken drama that the sitter conveys is intensified by the lowering, stormy sky, and the picture communicates a romantic sensibility that can truly be labelled Byronic. PROVENANCE: a private collection.

Late Victorian mahogany ships washstand from commander's cabin of HMS MOHAWK.

Crafted in solid mahogany with all original interior fittings. Top door folds down to reveal brass lined lid with copper sink and bottle holders. Copper reservoir and water carrier are inside bottom door. All parts are fitted to stay in place while at sea. The ship was a twin screw cruiser, 3rd class, with a complement of 172. She was armed with 6x6 inch guns, 8x3 pounders and 3 torpedo tubes. In 1890 she was based in Sheerness, having just been built, but later served on the South Atlantic, Mediterranean, Australian, China, and East Indies stations. Commander E.H. Bayly took command 04/08/91. A rare piece of history in excellent condition. Size 49.5 inches high by 8.5 inches deep (closed), or 24 inches deep with sink open, by 22.5 inches wide.

Vintage French Oak Ship's Wheel

Vintage French Oak Ship's Wheel with x 6 Spokes and Handbar Diameter: 17.5 inches / 45 cm

Portrait of a Naval Officer; English School c. 1700

Oil on canvas in a good quality carved and giltwood period frame. Painted within the fashionable feigned oval, the sitter is dressed in a relaxed manner, a cape thrown over his shoulder in the Classical style. In the background can be seen what appears to be a ship-of-war leaving a fortified port. The craft is a two decker, and gunports can just be made out; she flies the red ensign at the stern and a commander's pennant at the mast head. It seems most probable that the sitter is the captain of this ship - at this period uniforms were not worn in the Royal Navy. The artist has a slightly naive, almost sculptural style...very pleasing and direct. He was probably one of the many unknown travelling artists of the period who wandered over the country painting the lesser nobility and gentry. They were often found at naval ports where a captain returned from a successful voyage would spend some of his prize money on a portrait. (see Item 8473 for a portrait by the same artist of a young man, possibly the son of the above sitter, as the two paintings have been always been together). SIZE: 37 x 32 inches inc. frame. Well carved period frame. PROVENANCE; English Private Collection
