Rococo Red Veneer and Ormolu Clock Set by Japy Freres French - Circa 1880 |
| Rococo Red Veneer and Ormolu Clock Set by Japy Freres.
~ French - Circa 1880 ~
~~ Excellent condition ~~
A beautiful antique French Rococo clock set of the highest quality, by Japy Freres. It is of typical Rococo waisted keyhole shape, with beautifully figured natural red veneer mounted with finely modelled ormolu (gilded brass). Ormolu mounts are modelled as scrolling foliage and 'c' scrolls. Candelabra have matching bases and two light candelabrum modelled as entwined foliage with a floral centre.
The large dial is enamel on copper, has roman hours and Arabic minute ring. It is complete with original blued steel hands and has a convex bevelled glass.
The French Pendule de Paris movement is by Japy Freres and has the clockmakers mark on on the backplate, see picture below. The movement is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully serviced and timed up by our clockmaker, it runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Pendulum is an old replacement. Click the movie below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!
Condition of the case is very good with some very slight marks and faint shrinkage cracking to the veneer. Veneer has a lovely figure and a good finish. There are a couple of very minor losses of veneer in places, a tiny piece to the side of the clock and a small piece at the rear of one of the candelabra bases. Ormolu is in excellent condition with just some minor wear on the high spots. Original glass is in good condition. Dial is in excellent condition with some minor nibbles to the edges of winding holes.
