John Shapland Valley Of The Rocks Lynton North Devon Watercolour Painting

This is a delightful original watercolour and gouache painting by John Shapland. John Shapland (1865 - 1929) is a well listed artist. He generally painted in watercolour, his subjects were mainly Seascapes and Moorland Scenes. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Paris Salon and also in the USA. Shapland was principle of Exeter School Of Art from 1899 to 1913. The subject of this painting is The Castle Rock, Valley Of The Rocks, Lynton, North Devon, there are Seagulls flying past at various heights. Dating to around the early 1900's. Signed to the bottom left. The picture is 20 1/2" by 15 1/2" including the mount and frame and 14 1/4" by 10 1/4" excluding the mount and frame. The painting is in good condition, the frame has some wear including the odd chip. Shapland and Petter Edwardian Oak Partners Desk This fantastic Oak partners desk dates to 1900 and is by the highly regarded firm Shapland and Petter of Barnstaple, each lock being stamped with S&P B. It has the usual 9 drawer configuration with graduated drawers all with heavy brass drop handles, the drawer runners having been checked to ensure that they all work smoothly and the locks having been serviced to make sure that the desk is fully lockable. The fielded side panels are attractive and well designed. To the opposing side is a configuration of 3 hinged paneled doors each shelved to a depth of 16" adding even more useful storage space to this already extremely capacious desk. The original red gilt tooled leather inset provides a smooth working surface. The pictures are pre work and the desk will be re photographed once it has made its way through the workshop.
