Charles II Walnut, Oak & Bone Marquetry Chest of Drawers c1680 |
| This rare piece of early country furniture is absolutely stunning, the size, proportions, colour and condition are superb.
The chest of joined construction with a three plank walnut top, edged with an attractive rounded moulding, has panelled side sections, and original two panel back boards. The frame to the front of the chest is decorated with pairs of split turned spindles and the traditional shaped moulding to the base of the chest sits above turned bun feet.
There are four drawers which are graduated in depth, all constructed using primitive hand-made dovetail joints with deep grooved sides sliding on side runners.
Each of these wonderful hand-made drawers is unique in design. Having different geometric moulded fronts to each drawer, the bone-inlaid panels to the bottom three drawers are also each slightly different to the next in cut and design. Each of the drawers has a pair of split turned spindles to the centre, matching those on the outer frame of the chest.
This super piece of early country furniture has just been restored and requires no further work before taking its place in you home. Traces of ancient woodworm that are always found on a genuine item of this age have all been retreated and minor repairs to drawer runners and such like have all been carried out.
