V.RARE MID C19th 'NOTTINGHAM YEW WOOD LOW BACK WINDSOR CHAIR |
| A Very Rare Chair in lovely condition. Due to their rarity these chairs are sometimes falsely assumed to have been cut down but were in fact Tavern chairs and the forerunner of the 'Smoker's Bow'. They occour in various regional variations.
This one is of the 'Nottingham' genre but the arms and legs indicate to me that it was made in nearby Lincolnshire, probably Sleaford.
The front legs, crinoline stretcher, spindles, splat and arms are all Yew. The backrest is Burr Yew, the seat Elm and the back legs and stretchers Ash. It has had some very minor restorations over the years but is a remarkable survivor having been purchased privately by myself along with two others from the owner of a bed and breakfast establishment in Seaton Devon where they saw many years of service. |

A truly beautiful example of a Regency low side chair, the whole having been stripped to a bare frame and clamped prior to traditionally reupholstering including replacing springs, webbing etc, covered in a wonderful deep damson silk with flower and leaf decoration in golds and pinks, the serpentine shaped seat is piped and braided in gold. The whole raised on walnut legs the reeding enhanced with gilt decoration on small brass and ceramic casters. A lovely addition to any room.
