Signed and resembling reverse glass paintings, crystoleums are a combination of print and hand painting that gained huge popularity in the 30 years from 1885. Prints of the original paintings were pressed up against curved glass, the detail and colour gently rubbed away until all but the ink outlines were left and the colour and detail was then hand painted inside - the curved glass giving added depth to the image. Though thousands were painted, few survive and the quality and condition of these is excellent. Dating from around 1900, the painting retains its original gilded frame. Many hours of painstaking work went into these exquisite works of art yet the price is modest at £180.
Some slight damage to the gilt on the bottom edge of frame which can be touched in if required.
Shown in the final photograph with an equally good crystoleum by Thumann, available separately.
